True To False? Men Are Always Ready For Sex

Category: Truth or Myth

It is a total fallacy that men are always ready for sex. Just like women, the male libido depends on life stressors and circumstances. It is just another age-old stereotype that men are always up for sexual intercourse.

The following factors can have an effect on a man's libido: stress, depression, bad self-esteem, drug and alcohol use, lack of rest, and medication.

When a person feels stressed their body releases adrenaline and cortisol. Constant fluctuations in the levels of these hormones can lead to low libido. Stress can also cause the arteries to narrow and in turn restrict flow ultimately leading to erectile dysfunction. Stress can cause a man to be distracted during sex. And remember that sex and the mind are directly linked.

When a person is depressed, it is very hard to get sexually aroused since they feel so down and out. Studies have also shown that depression can alter the body's biochemistry and in turn reduce libido. Depression medication is also often the cause of a lack of sex drive and/or erectile dysfunction.

If you experience problems with your self-esteem, it is difficult to feel sexy and desired. If you feel unattractive you are significantly less likely to want to participate in sexual activity.

Excessive alcohol intake can lead to fatigue and erectile dysfunction. Enhancers such as dagga decrease a man's sex drive by suppressing the pituitary gland, which in turn regulates the production of testosterone. Low testosterone equals low libido.

A lack of rest can elevate cortisol levels and in turn, cause low libido. Therefore, it is of utmost importance for your sex life and health in general that you get enough quality rest.

Depression, insomnia, and diabetes medication have all been linked to erectile dysfunction. You should never just stop taking your medication because your sex life is suffering. Consult your doctor first so that they can prescribe an alternative that will not interfere with your libido and/or cause erectile dysfunction.

Relationship problems can affect intimacy. Anger, resentment, communication problems, and unresolved conflict can make their way into the bedroom and lead to a lack of sex drive.

It is however important to keep in mind that there are men who are sex addicts. A sex addict is a person who has a lack of control over sexual thoughts, impulses, and urges. While sexual impulses are natural, sex addiction only refers to behaviors that are done in excess and significantly affect an individual’s life in a negative way. Signs of obsession include but are not limited to: an unhealthy love of pornography (usually viewed in secret), masturbation after sex, excessive sexual confidence combined with mild aggression and conflict if sex is withheld when he demands it.

If you are concerned about your libido, please consult your doctor as soon as possible. They have the experience and knowledge to identify the cause of your low or excessively high libido. You should never be embarrassed to discuss sex with your physician.
