True Or False? Bisexual People Are More Likely To Cheat

Category: Truth or Myth

It is a total fallacy that bisexual people are more likely to cheat on their partners. This myth about the bisexual community is deeply rooted in stereotypes and can be extremely hurtful and harmful.

This common tall tale about bisexual individuals being more likely to cheat stems from the misconception that bi people are not able to make up their minds in terms of their sexual orientation and are attracted to anybody and everybody. This is utter nonsense! People cheat irrespective of their sexual orientation. Sexual identity has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Another very common misconception is that bisexual people are always open to group sexual activities. Due to the oversexualization of bi individuals in pop culture some lay people think that bisexual individuals exist to offer other people unique sexual experiences.

As with heterosexual and homosexual individuals, bisexual people cheat because of eight key reasons namely: anger, lack of love, low commitment, bad self-esteem, need for variety, neglect, sexual desire, and situations or circumstances. The mentioned factors not only influence why people cheat but how long they do so, their emotional investment in the affair and their sexual enjoyment.

Even though infidelity usually involves sex, it is not always purely about sex. Many people indulge in infidelity because they feel an emotional attachment to their affair partner. The cheater feels they receive the love and support they crave from the affair partner.

Infidelity rarely leads to a real relationship. Studies have show that a mere 1 out of 10 affairs ultimately turned into a full commitment in the form of marriage. However many individuals irrespective of their sexual orientation feel that once the trust is broken that the respect is gone and the relationship over.

It Is also interesting to note that individuals with a long history of infidelity, across multiple relationships, are more likely to be repeat offenders. On the other hand, once-off cheaters are less likely to cheat again, especially if it was long ago and circumstances have changed since then.

If you suspect infidelity in your relationship please practice caution by practicing safe sex in order to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Studies have shown that cheaters have a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases compared to individuals in so called open relationships. The reason for this being that people who cheat are more likely to indulge in unprotected intercourse than those in open relationships since they don't need to hide their sexual activities.

It is crucial to always use a condom during sex, a new one every single time. Only silicone or water based lubricants must be used with latex condoms since oil based lubes can cause latex material disintegration.

Please consult your doctor if you suspect your partner of cheating so that they can perform the necessary STD screening tests. If you do test positive for a sexually transmitted disease (STD), do not panic. Your physician will provide you with all the information you need on the treatment options available during your follow-up consultation.
